The Land of Unmade Decisions!
The Garage — In the world of Professional Organizers, we call it “the land of unmade decisions”!
You have probably done this yourself: you purchase a large item that comes in a box. You are not certain what to do with the box – what if you need to return that item? So you put it in the garage. The intention is to deal with it later but, eventually, you stack another box on top of it, and add more items on top of that…and now the thought of dealing with it is just too overwhelming, so you go back inside!
Those things are out of sight, and often forgotten. But that little voice in the back of your head reminds you constantly that you should deal with that pile in the garage.
As Organizers, we get excited when we see a garage that has lost its way! There is so much potential in an unorganized garage. We love the challenge because the transformation is one of the biggest we do.
We recently had the privilege of working with a busy couple in our hometown of Sonoma. They both worked very demanding jobs, and the thought of trying to organize their garage and make it function was out of the question. They just didn’t have the time.
So we dove in and clarified the goals of this space. It needed to be many things:
The first priority was overflow storage from the kitchen and space for an extra fridge.
Second, they wanted a bike station. They are both avid cyclists and needed storage space to be able to work on the bikes, fix a flat, or change out bike parts with ease. I am a big cycling nerd myself, so getting to set up someone else's workbench was dreamy.
They also needed storage for their bikes so they were safe, out of the way, and not taking up valuable floor space.
The final goal was to have a home gym where they could both workout together and have all of their workout gear within arm's reach.
So we got started on planning. This large wall space needed new shelving and storage with drawers for easily storing smaller items. We were limited in our options because the walls were stucco and drilling into them was going to be a major challenge.
We came up with the solution to design and install the Efla Classic free-standing shelving system, which covered everything we needed and met our client's goals.
Even Leroy the dog thinks highly of the new system we installed!
Next, we took this back section of the garage to set up our bike storage solution. This area of the garage was out of the way of other more high-traffic areas and the perfect spot for the bikes to be safely stored.
Our bike storage solution was to wall-mount them on a 1 x 8 board, install bike hooks, and place them on the wall at just the right height so both of our clients could reach their bikes with ease. These are our go-to bike hooks for wall hanging. They look good, they are functional and are extremely durable.
Lastly, we had the fun challenge of turning this section of the garage into a functional home gym.
The first order of business was installing the flooring so they had some cushion under their feet when working out. We used these rubber mats that connect together. Then we installed a weight rack to hold the kettlebells and a wall rack for the medicine balls. We left room for the treadmill which was on its way.
Now our clients can move on with their busy lives and not have the nagging feeling that they will never have the time to organize their garage.

Creating these transformative spaces for our clients is what keeps us going each day!
